MyReadingLab educator study assesses Lexile improvement at Joliet Junior College

Students in College Reading I completed an average of 13 diagnostics in MyReadingLab and improved their Lexile level an average of 110L; students in College Reading II completed an average of 15 diagnostics in MyReadingLab and improved their Lexile level an average of 153L. In both levels, more than half of students improved their Lexile by 100L or more.

After fully integrating MyReadingLab into class time in a computer lab, student post-test averages increased from 66 to 74 percent, and completion rates increased from 91 to 98 percent. As a result, all upper-level developmental reading sections now work on MyReadingLab during class time. After MyReadingLab became an integrated part of class time in all sections, students showed greater improvement from their Path Builder to Mastery Check scores. Completion rates also improved. Students in lower-level developmental reading are now completing Lexile work and showing good improvement in their reading level.

By completing reading exercises and diagnostics in MyReadingLab, students improved their Lexile level from an average of 148L in the lowest level developmental reading course, to an average of 112L in the upper level developmental reading course. Implementing MyReadingLab helped satisfy our department's assessment needs as well as teach supplemental reading skills to students outside of the classroom.

MiraCosta’s Adult High School Diploma Program uses Pearson's MySkillsLab in a lab-based, self-paced course designed to help students achieve reading and grammar competencies and be better prepared to enter into credit-bearing college courses. Since the use of MySkillsLab, placement rates into credit-bearing courses have increased from 32 percent to 42 percent in English 100 (college-level writing) and from 46 percent to 60 percent in Reading 100 (college-level reading).

Of 289 students completing the Bridge course with MyReadingLab, 58 percent have been able to accelerate through one or both levels of developmental reading, thereby entering college-level courses sooner. Since using MyReadingLab, success rates in the prep course have increased from 55 percent to 90.3 percent. Success rates for students testing into the subsequent developmental courses (following Bridge Reading Skills) have increased from 61 percent (before MyReadingLab) to 86.5 percent (after Bridge course with MyReadingLab).
