MyLab IT educator study documents hybrid emporium model in Business Computing I course

To save time and money for the department, the course was redesigned from a face-to-face course to a hybrid, emporium-style course run by one lead instructor, keeping MyLab IT as the foundation of the course. Students who completed all Excel Grader Projects in MyLab IT had average Excel Capstone Project scores seven percentage points higher than students who skipped one or more Excel Grader Projects and the difference is statistically significant. At the end of the course, 89 percent of students reported feeling extremely or very confident in their ability to successfully use Microsoft Office.

Data indicate strong, positive correlations between MyLab IT Simulation Trainings and MyLab IT Grader Projects, between MyLab IT Grader Projects and Capstone Grader Projects, and between MyLab IT Grader Projects and exam scores, suggesting positive relationships exist between successive course assignments. Students who earned Grader Project scores 90 percent or greater had exam scores an average of 14 percentage points higher than students who earned Grader Project scores less than 90 percent. Over 90 percent of student survey respondents reported they were able to use the Word and Excel skills learned from MyLab IT in real-life situations during the course of the semester.

Students with an overall MyLab IT score of 70 percent of higher had average test scores 29 percentage points higher than students with an overall MyLab IT score of less than 70 percent. 88 percent of student survey respondents said they were able to use the Word skills learned from MyLab IT in real-life situations (another course, a job, internship, etc.) during the course of the semester. Assigning MyLab IT Simulation Trainings in advance of class time facilitates the flipped classroom environment preferred by Professor Umrah.

Data indicate that students earning higher Dynamic Study Module scores also earned substantially higher final exam scores. Students showing mastery of Excel by earning a letter grade of A, B, or C on the Excel Grader Project had Excel Simulation scores 29 percentage points higher than students who earned a D or F letter grade on the Excel Grader Project. In an end-of-semester student survey, most respondents agreed that the test-review-retest pattern of the Dynamic Study Modules helped them learn and remember chapter content.

MyITLab was included as a key component of an Accounting Information Systems course to help students demonstrate proficiency in Excel. MyITLab allowed the instructor to consistently assess student competency in Excel with little effort or additional time. Acclaim badges were received by 95 percent of students on two Capstone Grader projects in MyITLab, allowing students to show current and potential employers their mastery of specific skills.

Also, students who had higher MyITLab Tech In Action homework scores had higher MyITLab Tech in Action quiz scores for the concepts portion of the course.
