Improve the Way Students Learn

Project Condor Videos

The Project Condor video series captures stunning footage of the Mountain West region, using a quadcopter and a GoPro camera. The videos have been created with annotation, sketching, and narrations to improve the way students learn about monoclines, streams, and terraces. Each video is also accompanied by assessment to test what students take away.

Provide your students with virtual field experience

GigaPan® Activities

GigaPan Activities take advantage of the GigaPan high-resolution panoramic picture technology developed by Carnegie Mellon University in conjunction with NASA. GigaPans are gigapixel panoramas - digital images with billions of pixels. These activities allow students to have a virtual field experience by exploring these Gigapan images, including the ability to zoom in on these huge panoramas and look at every fascinating detail.

See landscapes outside of the text

Mobile Field Trips

On each trip, students accompany geologist—pilot—photographer Michael Collier in the air and on the ground to see and learn about landscapes that relate to discussions in the text.  In Mastering, these videos are accompanied by auto-gradable assessments that track what students have learned.

Help students study better

Dynamic Study Modules help students study effectively—and at their own pace. How? By keeping them motivated and engaged. The assignable modules rely on the latest research in cognitive science, using methods—such as adaptivity, gamification, and intermittent rewards—to stimulate learning and improve retention. Each module poses a series of questions about a course topic. These question sets adapt to each student’s performance and offer personalized, targeted feedback to help them master key concepts. With Dynamic Study Modules, students build the confidence they need to deepen their understanding, participate meaningfully, and perform better—in and out of class. Available for select titles.

Additional Features

Everything you need in an easy-to-use format

Mastering provides a rich and flexible set of pre-built courses and assignments to get you started quickly. These assets can be used as is or customized to fit your specific teaching needs. The Calendar View on the course home page displays upcoming assignments and due dates, so you can easily stay organized. NEW! Questions are now easier to edit and delete for assignments and courses.

A powerful gradebook

The Mastering gradebook records all scores for automatically graded assignments. Struggling students and challenging assignments are highlighted in red, giving you an at-a-glance view of potential hurdles in the course.

Diagnostics and insights that help you guide the class

Diagnostics within Mastering provide unique insight into class and student performance. With a single click, you can view charts that summarize the most difficult problems, identify vulnerable students, and indicate grade distribution and score improvement over the duration of the course.

Wrong-answer feedback personalized for each student

Using data gathered from all of the students using the program, Mastering offers wrong-answer feedback that is specific to each student. Rather than simply providing feedback of the "right/wrong/try again" variety, Mastering guides students towards the correct final answer without giving the answer away.

Hints that offer clear guidance to students

Mastering provides hints of two types that help students work through, and ultimately solve, problems. Declarative hints provide advice on how to approach the problem, guiding students to the final answer. Socratic hints break a problem down into smaller sub-problems, which makes it easier for students to complete the original problem.

Dynamic, best-in-class content

Mastering is continually improving based on data generated through classroom use, resulting in content that is driven by the performance of actual students. We make corrections to improve problems that have ambiguous answer choices, ineffectual detractors, or tricky language, and continue to strengthen each problem through ongoing review of the data generated by Mastering students.
