Students who passed the course spent significantly more time using MyWritingLab and also completed more of the topics that were assigned to them. The correlation between the number of topics completed in MyWritingLab and students’ final essay score was moderately strong.

Students averaged 85 percent on required topic post-tests in MyWritingLab, demonstrating mastery of important grammar and writing skills. Student scores increased an average of 16 percentage points from diagnostic Skills Checks to post-tests for each required module. Eighty-one percent of student survey respondents said that completing MyWritingLab topics was extremely useful in helping to improve their writing. Pearson Writer gave students an opportunity for self-assessment in writing and revision, leading to better papers with fewer errors. One-hundred percent of student survey respondents believed that Pearson Writer positively impacted the grades they received on their writing assignments.

78 percent of referred students have completed the English and Reading FastTrack/OnTrack programs, and 70 percent of those students successfully retested on the Accuplacer and placed out of developmental education, thus saving $505,800 in tuition and 52,266 contact hours.

Key Results: Since first implementing MyWritingLab in 2006, pass rates in developmental English courses have improved 6.4 percentage points, and subsequent success rates in Composition courses are 12.6 percentage points higher. From 2006 to 2014, MyWritingLab use saved CSUB $92,000 and 16,991 classroom hours.

Key Results: Students who passed the co-requisite Composition course had an average MyWritingLab score 41 percentage points higher than students who did not pass the course. There is a positive correlation between a student’s MyWritingLab score and the average score they receive on writing assignments, suggesting that students who do well on MyWritingLab also do well on their essays.
