Personalize learning for each student

Continuously Adaptive Learning

Thanks to advances in adaptive learning technology, you no longer have to teach as if every student learns in the same way and at the same rate. Mastering with Adaptive Learning assesses student performance and activity in real time and, using data and analytics, personalizes content to reinforce concepts that target each student’s strengths and weaknesses. Watch our video to learn more.

Dynamic Study Modules

Adaptive Follow-Ups

Dynamic Study Modules

Help students study effectively on their own by continuously assessing their activity and performance in real time. Here's how it works: students complete a set of questions with a unique answer format that also asks them to indicate their confidence level. Questions repeat until the student can answer them all correctly and confidently. Once completed, Dynamic Study Modules explain the concept using materials from the text. These are available as graded assignments prior to class, and accessible on smartphones, tablets, and computers. NEW! Instructors can now remove questions from Dynamic Study Modules to better fit their course. Available for select titles.

Adaptive Follow-Ups

Adaptive Follow-Up Assignments are based on each student's past performance on their course work to date, including homework, tests, and quizzes. These provide additional coaching and targeted practice as needed, so students can master the material. Available for select titles.

Give Students Coaching and Feedback 24/7

Help students prepare before lecture with Prelecture Videos

Interactive Prelecture Videos support student preparation before class and facilitate active classrooms. These whiteboard-style animations provide an introduction to key topics and include embedded assessment to help students prepare before lecture and to help professors identify student misconceptions.

Encourage students to learn and apply physics concepts

Direct Measurement Videos

Coming for Fall 2017 Classes! These short, high-quality videos show real situations of physical phenomena that students can use to learn and apply physics concepts. Grids, rulers, and frame-counters appear as overlays on the video, enabling students to make precise measurements of quantities such as position and time.

Students then apply these quantities along with physics concepts to solve problems and answer questions about the motion of the objects in the video. The problems can be used to replace or supplement traditional word problems, or as open-ended questions to help develop problem solving skills.

Boost student math skills needed for success in physics

Physics Primer

Coming for Fall 2017 Classes! The Physics Primer is a series of tutorials in Mastering Physics that focus on remediating students’ math skills necessary for their first college physics course. Through videos, hints, and feedback, the Physics Primer refreshes students’ math skills necessary for success in physics. These tutorials appear as an item assignable before the course begins as well as throughout the course to ensure students practice and maintain their math skills, while tying together mathematical operations and physics analysis.

Provide quantitative understanding of concepts before class

Quantitative Prelecture Videos

Coming for Fall 2017 Classes! Assignable, interactive Quantitative Prelecture Videos complement the Conceptual Prelecture Videos, giving students exposure to concepts before class and helping them learn how problems for a specific concept are worked.

Additional Features

Everything you need in an easy-to-use format

Mastering provides a rich and flexible set of pre-built courses and assignments to get you started quickly. These assets can be used as is or customized to fit your specific teaching needs. The Calendar View on the course home page displays upcoming assignments and due dates, so you can easily stay organized. NEW! Questions are now easier to edit and delete for assignments and courses.

A powerful gradebook

Mastering's gradebook records all scores for automatically graded assignments. Struggling students and challenging assignments are highlighted in red, giving you an at-a-glance view of potential hurdles in the course.

Diagnostics and insights that help you guide the class

Mastering's diagnostics provide unique insight into class and student performance. With a single click, you can view charts that summarize the most difficult problems, identify vulnerable students, and indicate grade distribution and score improvement over the duration of the course.

Wrong-answer feedback personalized for each student

Using data gathered from all of the students using the program, Mastering offers wrong-answer feedback that is specific to each student. Rather than simply providing feedback of the "right/wrong/try again" variety, Mastering guides students towards the correct final answer without giving the answer away.

Hints that offer clear guidance to students

Mastering provides hints of two types that help students work through, and ultimately solve, problems. Declarative hints provide advice on how to approach the problem, guiding students to the final answer. Socratic hints break a problem down into smaller sub-problems, which makes it easier for students to complete the original problem.

Dynamic, best-in-class content

Mastering is continually improving based on data generated through classroom use, resulting in content that is driven by the performance of actual students. We make corrections to improve problems that have ambiguous answer choices, ineffectual detractors, or tricky language, and continue to strengthen each problem through ongoing review of the data generated by Mastering students.
